Ferguson happy with additions

3 August 2017

Manager Darren Ferguson was pleased to get two more players in ahead of Saturday’s season-opener at home to Gillingham.

Issam Ben Khemis signed a two-year deal after impressing during his recent trial spell over pre-season, and Rodney Kongolo has joined Rovers on a six-month loan deal from Manchester City.

Ben Khemis joins after leaving French outfit FC Lorient in the summer, whilst Kongolo arrives at the Keepmoat Stadium after returning from UEFA Under-19 Championships with Holland.

Both players have been on the Rovers’ radar for a while, and for Ferguson says it was a relief to get both deals over the line.

“We’re delighted to Kongolo on board, it’s been one that we’ve put a lot of effort in to, the delay was with him being away with Holland and he had plenty of offers, but we were fortunate to get it over the line,” he said.

“Ben Khemis gives us another left foot in midfield, he’s more of a carrier of the ball and he’s a little bit different to what we’ve got and I think that it is important that we have a lot of variation in that midfield area.

“I’m pleased to get them both in and that takes us up to six, you can maybe look to John Marquis as a seventh, and the other big decision was keeping Andy Williams, they’re the eight things that I’ve done that are pivotal.”

Ferguson has been impressed with all of his new additions during the transfer window, but also confirmed that midfielder Alex Kiwomya will miss the start of the season due to injury.

“Ben Whiteman is a good size and he’s going to put his foot in, likewise with Rodney, Danny Andrew gives you the balance and pace down the left-hand side, and we know what Niall Mason brings,” he said.

“Alex Kiwomya might be out for a couple months to start with, but he also brings raw pace to the side when he’s fit, so I’m delighted with what I’ve done so far.

“It’ll be important for us to keep the core of our team fit, we have to be consistent, that is the most important thing, whatever team I put out on a Saturday or a Tuesday, we will give teams a game.”
