Ferguson wants upset

21 August 2017

Manager Darren Ferguson is confident that his Rovers side can pull off an upset and beat Sky Bet Championship side Hull City on Tuesday night in the Carabao Cup second round.

Rovers host the Tigers after an unbeaten start to the season and Ferguson is optimistic that whatever side he puts out, can get in to the next round of the competition.

“It’s a big test but I know what the team is and how I want to play, hopefully we put in a good performance, when you play a higher team there’s certain things that you need to do better technically and we must make sure we’re good on the ball,” he said.

“The aim is to get a shock and get in the third round, but I’m looking forward to it and I’m looking forward to seeing what we’ve worked on in training, we have to settle early, you can’t get too comfortable because things can change very quickly.

“We can’t lose our shape, there’s a lot of quality in their side but we want to keep the positive feeling in our team at the moment, and concentration will be key, I’m pleased with our performances so far though.”

Ferguson also hoped that the incentive of a place in the third round of the Carabao Cup, potentially against some of England’s top sides, would serve as great motivation for his players against Hull.

“We’re at home against a good team, but it’s a winnable game, all respect to Hull because it’ll be tough but it’s a massive incentive and it has to be a huge motivation to get in that third round,” he said.

“For the players to get in that third round, if you get one of the big boys it can change everything and its more money in too which is huge.

“I’m confident whatever the team that we can get the job done, whoever I put out I would be happy to play against Wimbledon on Saturday too, but our team will be strong no matter what.”
