Lawlor eyeing cup run

7 August 2017

Ian Lawlor believes that a good cup run can help breed confidence within the Rovers squad ahead of the Carabao Cup first round tie at Bradford City on Tuesday evening.

Rovers travel to the Northern Commercials Stadium on the back of an opening day clean sheet against Gillingham, and Lawlor says the team will try to replicate that as they look to progress in to the second round of the competition.

"Getting a clean sheet gave us something to build from, it boosted our confidence but it was mixed emotions on Saturday as we saw it as two points dropped," he said.

"The communication is working well with the defence, we all know our jobs and each other's games which makes it easier on the pitch.

"A cup run would be good for us, we want to win as many games as we can but we take it game by game as that's what got us so much success last season."

The Irish keeper is into his first full season with the club after joining from Manchester City in January, and believes that the squad have what it takes to be competitive on all fronts throughout the 2017/18 campaign.

"We can get into more of a routine now that the competitive action is back underway, it's totally different to pre-season and we were more than ready for the league season to begin," he added.

"We have a team spirit which is stronger than anywhere else that i've been, we've got a good bond within the group and that helps the new players to settle in quicker.

"The manager knows the game very well and everything he does is for a purpose, it helps us on the pitch and that's something we're looking to continue against Bradford."

Rovers head to Bradford City on Tuesday in the Carabao Cup before going to Blackburn Rovers next Saturday in Sky Bet League One. Get your tickets for both games, or the visit of Blackpool on Saturday August 19, from the Club Doncaster Box Office now at
