Manager Darren Ferguson is targeting nothing but a Rovers victory when his side host Rochdale at the Keepmoat Stadium on Friday night.
Rovers beat Northampton Town 3-0 last time out, while Rochdale were defeated 2-0 by Blackburn Rovers, despite the loss Ferguson says that fellow manager Keith Hill has done a good job at Dale during his time at the club.
“It will be a hard game on Friday night, but I have to keep going back to it, it’s all about getting the three points if we can and there will be no excuses from my players,” he said.
“I like Rochdale as a team, I think the manager has done a good job with them and what I like about them is they play with a very high energy.
“They have a lot of young players in the team, they have flexibility in the formations that they like to play and they always give us a hard game.”
Forward Alfie May returned to the starting XI against the Cobblers and partnered John Marquis in attack, and Ferguson says both strikers are nuisances to play against.
“I thought Alfie was very good, he could have had a couple of goals against Northampton on Boxing Day to be honest and him and John are a nuisance up front, they are an attacking pair and press high which I like to do at home,” he said.
“Alfie has recently come back from injury and has hit the ground running, the difficult thing for me now as a manager is players coming in and doing well and I’ll have to pick the right forwards for the game against Rochdale.
“John is going through a tough spell where he isn’t scoring goals, but what he is doing for the team is fantastic and you can see that the players around him are trying to help him get on the scoresheet. His performances lately have been fantastic.”
