James Coppinger is looking forward to going up against old friends when Rovers take on Oldham Athletic in Sky Bet League One this weekend.
The captain’s former team-mate Richie Wellens is now manager at Boundary Park, while fellow ex-Rovers midfielder Paul Green is also plying his trade with the Latics.
“This one will be extra special because I get on so well with both of them, I speak to Greeny regularly and I’ve been in contact with Richie since he got the job,” he said.
“I’m sure the fans will enjoy it, the three of us were part of such a special team when we won promotion to the Championship in 2008 and beat Leeds at Wembley.
“We played some of the best football the club has seen in a long time and I think that’s the way that Richie will want his team to play.”
Coppinger is expecting an open encounter at the Keepmoat Stadium, and says that friendship will go out of the window once the game gets underway.
“They play an attacking style of football and look to score a lot of goals so it will be interesting to go up against them and see where both teams are at,” he added.
“The last couple of performances have been really good for us, we comfortably beat Scunthorpe and performed well in the second half against Oxford so we need to keep going.
“It will be nice to get three points and then speak to them afterwards, the day of a game can be quite intense so it may not be straight after the game that I speak to them but we always keep in touch.”
