Darren Ferguson felt his side managed the game well after comfortably beating Northampton Town 3-0 on Boxing Day.

Goals from James Coppinger, Niall Mason and Andy Butler secured Rovers’ second win over the Christmas period and the manager was pleased to come away with the points.

“The game went as well as it possibly could have, we scored three goals and could have had more, we managed the game very well,” he said.

“I’m very pleased with how the players have taken responsibility at this stage of the season, we were very professional and got the job done in a good manner.

“We did what we had to do in the second half, they never really troubled us and a third goal for us was always going to kill the game off.”

The victory meant Rovers had won back-to-back games for the first time this season, which helped them climb to 13th in the Sky Bet League One table.

“Getting the back-to-back wins hasn’t been mentioned too much in the dressing room, we wanted to get it done but we’ve deserved more points than we’ve got this season,” he added.

“The result is always the key factor at this time of year, it’s about getting as many points in the four games we’ve got – two victories is a great start.

“The players managed themselves very well, we gave them Christmas Day off and that clearly benefitted the performance, the next game will be the most difficult of the Christmas period.”
