Players hand out Christmas gifts at hospital

12 December 2017

Members of Rovers’ first-team squad handed out presents to poorly youngsters as part of a festive visit to Doncaster Royal Infirmary.

Andy Butler, Matty Blair, Tommy Rowe and John Marquis were joined by Doncaster Rugby League players Kieran Cross, Jordie Hedges and Jason Tali to visit patients in the children’s ward.

The presents were bought after a collection among Club Doncaster staff based at the Keepmoat Stadium, with kit suppliers FBT also donating a number of mini footballs and beanie bears.

The Rovers players also had a whip-round for a further cash donation, and got the chance to see the specialist equipment purchased as a result of them handing over more than £400 in December 2016.

Blair said: “It’s a humbling experience to come in and meet these children and their families, to see what they are going through at a time of year when people are thinking about celebration. It was very rewarding to see the smiles on their faces when we popped round with some presents.

“We know Club Doncaster is a really community-focused organisation, only highlighted by us doing this as a joint visit with Dons players, and hopefully all the youngsters we saw can be out in time to enjoy Christmas at home with their families.”

Dons player Kieran Cross said: “You could see when we walked in they perhaps weren’t feeling great about being in hospital, but after we’d given them some presents they had a smile on their faces. That’s what it’s all about, spreading a little happiness at Christmas time.”

Former Rovers player Richie Wellens brings his Oldham Athletic side to the Keepmoat Stadium on Saturday, there is still time for you to purchase your tickets for the highly-anticipated Sky Bet League One clash now from tickets.clubdoncaster.co.uk.
