Rovers 1 Oldham Athletic 1

16 December 2017

A late equaliser from Eoin Doyle meant that the spoils were shared after a 1-1 draw at home to Oldham Atheltic in Sky Bet League One.

Andy Butler opened the scoring with a second-half header, before Doyle’s late equaliser saw the visitors snatch a point at the death.

It was a quick tempo start to the game at a cold Keepmoat Stadium, and it was the visitors that had the game’s opening chance.

Doyle and Jack Byrne exchanged passes in the Rovers half, before releasing Gevaro Nepomuceno 25 yards out from goal.

The Oldham winger tried his luck from distance, but he watched on as his effort flew well over Ian Lawlor’s crossbar.

Rovers came forward straight away, with good work down the right-hand side by Alfie Beestin creating room for John Marquis to have a shot on goal, but his strike went just wide of Johny Placide’s far post.

Marquis then went close again shortly afterwards, as he controlled a bouncing ball well on the edge of the area, but again his strike whistled just past the Latics keeper’s far post.

The Latics’ next attack saw them create the best chance of the game, with Tope Obadeyi powering down the right past Tyler Garratt, before releasing Nepomuceno.

Nepomuceno’s fierce drive from the edge of the area beat Lawlor, but Butler was back on the line to deny the winger once more with a stunning block.

It was an end-to-end encounter at the Keepmoat, and it was Rovers who were next to go close to breaking the deadlock.

Alfie May was sent one-on-one with Placide, but the forward’s strike was superbly tipped away by the Haitian to ensure the scores stayed level at the break.

After the interval the quick tempo to the game continued, and on the hour, the home side took the lead.

May was brought down on the edge of the area by Oldham captain Anthony Gerrard, and this left Beestin, Ben Whiteman and Tommy Rowe all standing over the ball.

The set-piece was played in by Rowe for Butler to head the ball past Placide and in off the crossbar to hand Rovers the lead.

Rowe then had the game’s next chance, as he collected Butler’s knock down on the edge of the area, but his shot was taken at the second attempt by Placide.

Still the Latics came forward though, and substitute Aaron Amadi-Holloway was next to go close, as his shot from the right fizzed past Lawlor’s far post.

Doyle was next to try and get the visitors back on level terms, but his header from Kean Bryan’s cross was over the crossbar.

The visitors did get the equaliser they were looking for just moments later, as Dan Gardner’s ball in was flicked on by Craig Davies and into the both of the on-rushing Doyle who smashed home from the edge of the six-yard box to level the scores.

Rovers will now look to get a win on the road, with a trip to face Bristol Rovers next weekend, before a Boxing Day clash with Northampton Town at the Keepmoat Stadium.
