Boss happy with deals

3 February 2017

Darren Ferguson paid tribute to James Coppinger and Andy Butler after they signed new contracts with the club.

The pair, who are team and club captain respectively, agreed extensions to their deals which will see them stay at the Keepmoat Stadium until 2018.

Ferguson was pleased to get the paperwork done and praised the two players for their contributions so far this season, with Rovers now sitting 16 points clear of the play-off places.

“All credit to them, they’ve been outstanding. It’s the form they’re in that’s got them the deals,” he said.

“They’ve both been very good and fully deserve the contract extensions, the pair of them just keep on improving with age. Their experience has been key for us in getting to where we are now.

“It fits into what we want to do, we want young players to have experienced professionals to look up to.”

Morecambe are the next team to try and put a dent in Rovers unbeaten home record in Sky Bet League Two, and the boss says his side must continue to perform well if they are to pick up another three points.

“It’ll be a tough game and we’ve got to make sure we stick to the standards we’ve been setting,” Ferguson explained.

“We’ve dealt with the expectations very well, our goal on Saturday is to beat Morecambe, nothing else.

“12 goals in the past four games is fantastic. I’m delighted with how we’re going with 18 games to go.”
