Houghton loss is motivation

24 February 2017

Darren Ferguson says the injury to Jordan Houghton will provide further motivation to the Rovers squad to ensure they secure promotion to Sky Bet League One.

Chelsea loanee Houghton suffered a serious knee injury in the 1-1 draw with Luton Town, and Ferguson expressed his disappointment for the 21-year-old.

“He took it hard. He came in on Tuesday morning and he was visibly upset and as a group we thanked him for his efforts, but he will recover from it there’s no doubt about that,” he said.

“We wish him all the best and I hope to work with him again. He’s been one of our most consistent players this season and he played in every game. We’ll miss his influence around the place.

“It’s an extra motivation now to get the job done and finish it off, hopefully Jordan will get a medal. It would be nice to get him back here having won the title.”

The Rovers manager expects his side to show a response against Accrington Stanley at the Keepmoat Stadium this weekend, following a run of four league games without a win.

“It would be unusual for a team not to have a small blip during a season. That’s all it is, we feel as though our performances have warranted more points,” he added.

“We’ve come through a tough run of fixtures and not picked up enough points so now we know we have to start winning games again.

“If we do our job right then we don’t have to worry about other teams results. It’s only when you don’t do your own job that you look at the scores from elsewhere.”
