Marquis wants win

24 February 2017

“Whether it was Accrington or Arsenal coming here, we’d be looking to win,” was the message from John Marquis as Rovers look to end their winless run against Accrington Stanley.

The forward is Rovers top goal scorer this season with 18 in Sky Bet League Two, and believes his side will soon get back to winning ways.

“With games against Newport and Carlisle and Luton, you’ve got two teams fighting for promotion and one trying to avoid relegation so they were all tough games,” he said.

“Not being able to be on the training pitch as much affected us with having three games in seven days. This week we’ve recovered and trained well.

“We can’t get too concerned about it, every team has a blip, it’s important that we focus on the next few games. We’ve got some games where we can really kick on.”

Marquis made his Rovers debut against Stanley on the opening day of the season, and feels the team have improved a great deal since then.

“We’ve learnt so much since that defeat. We’ve played different formations and had different players come in since then and we’re looking at the game on Saturday as a chance to extend our home record,” he added.

“We can take confidence from the games we’ve played so far but you don’t get anything from being top after 32 games. It’s all about where you are after 46.

“It’s always nice to get a personal awards throughout the season but there’s only one award that I want and you don’t get that until May.”
