Mason grateful for fans

5 February 2017

Niall Mason praised the impact the Rovers fans have had on the team’s success this season.

John Marquis’ second half equaliser secured a 1-1 draw with Morecambe and extended the unbeaten run at the Keepmoat to 18 games stretching back to the end of last season, and Mason says the backing of the fans has been a huge factor.

“The fans have been fantastic, they’ve travelled down to watch us against teams like Portsmouth and Exeter and they’ve always been behind us,” he said.

“I hope they realise just how massive they’ve been for us throughout this unbeaten run.

“We’re a positive group and we all want to get results for this football club.”

The Aston Villa loanee has slotted in effortlessly in a number of positions this season, most recently left back, and, after coming up against veteran Shrimps midfielder Kevin Ellison, said he enjoyed the physical battle with the 38-year-old.

“He’s a funny guy, he’s a very good player for his age and he’s managed to maintain his fitness,” he said.

“He had a quick joke with me when he got past me in the first half which added to the competitiveness.

“A lot of the teams in this league try and play good football as Morecambe did, so it’s down to us to find different ways of beating them.”
