Marquis is ready

5 January 2017

Rovers forward John Marquis is ready to face his former side.

‘Strikers win you games, defenders win you championships’ was the defiant message from Rovers forward John Marquis as he prepares to face his former club.

Portsmouth are the latest visitors to the Keepmoat on Thursday evening, and Marquis feels that his side are now starting to find a successful formula.

After coming under fire earlier on in the season, Rovers defence has now kept three clean sheets in four games over the festive period.

“It’s finding the balance between scoring goals and keeping them out at the other end.” Said Marquis.

“Teams are setting up differently against us. For me we’re the best team in the league going forward, we’re going to big teams like Plymouth and they’re sitting off us and showing us respect.”

The 24-year-old had a brief loan spell with Pompey in the 13/14 campaign, scoring two goals in seven appearances in all competitions.

“My spell there didn’t quite go to plan, I did well in the first month and then found myself on the bench. Scoring against them at Fratton Park this season was nice.” Marquis explained.

The Rovers number nine is the clubs top scorer this season with 11, but despite his hot streak in front of goal, Marquis is keeping his feet firmly planted on the ground.

He added: “I’ve been happy to be playing, I’ve done well so far. It’s about staying level headed through both highs and lows, but as long as I’m in the team the chances will keep on coming.”
