Boss impressed with young players

30 July 2017

Rovers manager Darren Ferguson was impressed with the younger players in the squad as his side completed their final pre-season game against Chesterfield.

Forward Alfie May was sent off late in the first half before the Spireites scored four goals in 45 minutes to give them the win.

“I was pleased the young lads got minutes on the pitch. I thought Tyler Garratt did excellent again in the second half, along with Joe Wright and Craig Alcock got 90 minutes,” he said.

“I watched the first 25 minutes from the stand and there were certain things that impressed me, they did what I asked them to do, to keep their discipline and keep their shape but it was a bit frustrating.

“You have to feel for some players such as Andy Williams when we went down to 10 men, as he was really not going to get much out of the match after that point.”

Gillingham are the visitors to the Keepmoat Stadium on August 5 as the 2017/18 Sky Bet League One season gets underway and Ferguson says his side are prepared for the upcoming campaign.

“I am ready for the start of the season and some of our performances in game against Derby and Sheffield Wednesday have been very good and that’s what we can take out of it,” he added.

“The way I look at pre-season is, have we got enough minutes on the pitch, have we got enough numbers and how we are going to work with the injuries that we have got.

“We are ready for the Gillingham game and the lads are ready for the season to start, I think when you get to this part of pre-season you want get underway.”
