Ferguson impressed with defence

21 July 2017

With just one goal conceded across three pre-season games, Darren Ferguson has been impressed with his side’s defensive efforts in the build up to the 2017/18 campaign.

Rovers held Sky Bet Championship side Derby County to a 1-1 draw on Tuesday evening and head to face non-league outfit Guiseley this weekend looking to continue their run of positive results.

“We’ve done well defensively, we kept our discipline and shape really well and managed to limit the number of chances opposing teams are getting,” he said.

“I want our wing backs to play a bit further forward as once they do that we look more of a threat, when they play higher we can pin the opposition back a bit more.

“The squad is looking much fitter since they returned to training, we’ve had some good exercises and I’ve been really pleased with them.”

Rovers kick-off their Sky Bet League One season against Gillingham at the Keepmoat Stadium on August 5, and Ferguson wants to give his key players more time on the field in the upcoming friendly matches to ensure they are ready for competitive action.

“I’ll assess where we’re at before deciding on the team to face Guiseley, I want to make sure that the players recover well and get enough rest,” he added.

“In an ideal world, the players that only had half an hour against Derby will get an hour against Guiseley on Saturday, I want to ensure that all of the squad is used.

“If we can, I’d like to build the players up so that they’re ready to play 90 minutes against Sheffield Wednesday and Chesterfield, but time will tell if that’s going to be possible.”
