Striker Liam Mandeville says a change in his approach will help him enjoy an injury-free season.
The 20-year-old only managed to play three times in the second half of the 2016/17 campaign, which saw Rovers clinch promotion from Sky Bet League Two, and Mandeville is feeling in great shape as Rovers return to Sky Bet League One.
“Hopefully I can stay injury-free this season compared to last season. It is good to practice but sometimes I was practising too much, I have changed a few things like my diet and I feel fitter,” he said.
“Pre-season has been good so far, it is always difficult with the running, but you have got to get through it and get fit for the season.
“I feel more like a first-team player now, I want to play as many games as I can and score as many goals as I can, but hopefully we can do as well as we can in the league because we have a good team.”
Mandeville scored Rovers’ second of the game from the penalty spot as Darren Ferguson’s men beat Tadcaster Albion 2-0 at the i2i Stadium on Saturday, taking his tally in pre-season to four goals, and the forward is looking forward to testing himself against Derby County on Tuesday night.
“It was never going to be easy for us against Tadcaster, as we knew it would be a step-up in quality, we had a few chances, I had a great chance too but the keeper made a great save,” he said.
“It was a good run out to be fair, they were better quality than Armthorpe and they kept the ball well in the second half.
“We are looking forward to making another step-up against Derby County on Tuesday, they are a Championship side and we probably won’t touch the ball
as much as we did here but it is good to test ourselves.”
