Darren Ferguson believes that John Marquis agreeing a new contract with Rovers could prove to be the best piece of business done by the club this summer.
The striker agreed a three-year-deal ahead of the pre-season fixture against Derby County at the Keepmoat Stadium and Ferguson was pleased to get it over the line.
“I’m delighted to finally get it done, I was always confident that it would be and I’m pleased for him as well as it settles him down and gives him some security,” he said.
“He’s a massive player for us, its good news for us as a club and it’s come at a good time. It could possibly be the biggest signing of the summer for us.
“When I spoke to John, he made it clear that he wanted to stay and there were no doubts from either side that we wanted to get the deal done.”
Rovers drew 1-1 with the Rams after Tommy Rowe’s second half equaliser cancelled out Richard Keogh’s early opener and the Rovers boss was happy with his side’s overall display.
“I’m really pleased, the second half was much better than the first in an attacking sense. I think we lacked a little bit of belief on the ball in the first half,” he added.
“The changes we made in the second half gave us a bit more going forward, James Coppinger in particular made a difference and he benefits us as he can play in a number of positions.
“We want to keep the ball as that’s a big part of our game but we don’t just want to keep it for the sake of it, we’ve got to look to break teams down quicker.”
