Foundation Friday: bike donation

3 March 2017

Club Doncaster Foundation (CDF) was delighted to donate a bike to Outwood Academy Danum, helping them acknowledge their dedicated students.

Every student with impeccable behaviour and 100 per cent attendance throughout the term was put into a prize draw to receive the bike, and victorious was Daniel Boyd, who was presented with the bike during assembly.

The donation becomes the start of a blossoming partnership between the school and Club Doncaster Foundation, with the aim to increase attendance and behaviour while also promoting CDF’s bike library.

In attendance to help present Daniel the bike was Councillor John Mounsey, who was delighted with the donation. He said: “I’m really grateful to Club Doncaster Foundation for buying and donating the bike because attendance is vital especially when you get to the latter stages of school life, the pupils really need to be in every day.

“I’d like to think that this will now act as an incentive for the rest of the school to know that, not only are they bettering their education for being in every day but also they can be rewarded for it.

“The bike library is a wonderful idea; to be able to borrow a bike whenever you want for however long you want is fantastic – I hope the students take advantage of that.”

Acting Principal, Jane Gaunt was also in attendance and hopes that the prize of a brand new mountain bike will inspire the rest of her students to improve their own attendance and behaviour.

She said: ”It’s a great achievement to achieve 100% attendance so the students really do deserve to be recognised.

“It’s been proven that a student can drop a grade for every 5% of dropped attendance and that can be the difference between getting into their preferred college and not.”

She continued: “I think it’s a fantastic incentive because there’s quite a lot of depravation in this area so there might be cases where students can’t afford to buy a bike.

“We have a real culture in the school of students coming on bikes so it makes a huge difference and I think now that they know about the bike library, a lot more will be using it more regularly.”
