Marquis haunts former club

19 March 2017

Striker John Marquis felt that Leyton Orient’s equaliser just before half time was the motivation Rovers needed to go on and win the game.

Marquis, who spent three months on loan at Orient last season knew it would be a difficult game against Daniel Webb’s young side, but he was impressed with the way his side carried out their duties.

He said: “We knew it was not going to be an easy game coming here, their manager has a group of young players who he knows is going to give 100% for him.

“They got a goal just before half time and the manager said to us that when a team get back in the game and they think they have a chance, it hurts more when you then take that chance back away from them.

“I think the fact that they got a goal just before the break lifted us on, we knew we had 45 minutes to go on and win the game and we did, we scored some good goals and we could have probably scored a few more but we were professional and got the job done.”

The forward scored his 22nd and 23rd league goals of the season in a second half that
Rovers dominated from start to finish, but Marquis wants to secure promotion before acknowledging any personal achievements.

“If I can score goals that help Doncaster for the next eight games, as long as we get promoted and possibly win this league and anything that comes after that is an added bonus for me,” said Marquis.

“I’m playing in a team that creates a lot of opportunities for me, I work hard in training on my finishing and that is something before this season I was not renowned for but this season I’m scoring a lot more.

“I’m very much a team player, I will always put the team first over any personal performances and accolades, but if I can get the golden boot at the end of the season then that would be fantastic.”
