Mason wants the title

9 March 2017

Niall Mason says the main aim for Rovers for the remainder of the season is to finish in top spot and secure the title.

Rovers sit four points clear of second placed Plymouth Argyle, and Aston Villa loanee Mason believes that finishing as champions would be a great end to the season.

“The concentration is trying to win this league. Anyone within the club would admit that we’d be disappointed finishing second or third, our goal is to win the league having been at the top for so long,” he said.

“We need to start winning games again and being consistent, these next three or four games are going to be really big for us.

“We’re not happy that we haven’t won as many games as we would have liked in the last month or so, but we haven’t lost many either and we’ve shown that we’re up to the challenge mentally.”

The 20-year-old has stepped into the defensive midfield role recently in the absence of Jordan Houghton, and says he feels at home playing in front of the back four.

“I’ve enjoyed playing in the holding role recently, I’ve played in there for the last three games and I feel I’m improving with each and every match that goes by,” he added.

“It’s a position I played as a youth player, it was my main position and I enjoyed it but I haven’t played there for a while so to be back in there now is good for me.

“I want to learn from what Jordan did in the same position, as he was massive for us and did a great job so it is a tough act to follow.”
