James Coppinger is taking inspiration from the 2012/13 campaign as Rovers go in search of the Sky Bet League Two title.
It was the captain’s last minute winner on the final day at Brentford four years ago which sealed top spot, and he says there are a lot of similarities this time around.
“The game against Brentford was unbelievable, it showed that anything can happen and the pressure is totally different compared to when you are leading the race,” Coppinger said.
“It’s not ideal after being in control for so long but we’ll look forward to the game and see what happens.
“Everyone has got an opportunity to write themselves into the club’s history, those opportunities don’t come around too often so it’s important we grab it with both hands.”
Coppinger made his EFL debut while on loan at Saturday’s opponents Hartlepool in 2000, and has sympathy for the position the club are now in ahead of what is a must win game for both teams.
“It’s a difficult one for me as I made my football league debut there, it’s a club which is close to me and I’ve been in the situation they are in now,” he added.
“I know how they are going to feel going into that game but we’ll go there and look to get the job done.
“There has to be some perspective, we’ve had an amazing season and if we were to go there and clinch the title it would be the icing on the cake.”
