Varsity success

25 May 2017

Club Doncaster Sports College hosted their annual Varsity Challenge game, as both the female and male teams graced the Keepmoat turf in a head-to-head against Selby College.

It was a clean sweep for Club Doncaster, with both teams bringing home silverware after two gruelling matches in the roaring sunshine.

The girls were up first, securing their trophy on penalties before the boys made it two out of two with a convincing 2-0 win in the afternoon.

Head of Year 12 at Club Doncaster Sports College, Ben Thompson, was delighted with proceedings,.

He said: “The varsity challenge games between the Sports College and Selby College represent the close ties we have as partners and showcases the excellent sports provision over the two colleges.

“We were delighted to host the second annual varsity event, especially in such sunny conditions.

“Varsity is all about the students and it offers a unique opportunity to play in such professional surroundings, winning is secondary, so I would like to commend all four teams for putting on two excellent football matches, played in great spirit.

“The reaction on the faces of the players reaffirmed what a special event this is and we are excited for the legacy to continue.”

Club Doncaster Foundation’s Health and Wellbeing team also spent the whole day preparing refreshments for the spectators and players, which included cooking 96 burgers, which were kindly donated by Queens Butchers.

Ben added: “The day was a real team effort, from students officiating and volunteering, to Nick Gillott and his Health and Wellbeing team.

“They worked their socks off to feed all of our guests and players, to DRFC Academy manager Kieran Scarff for lending us this season’s kit and I’d like to mention Pat Queen Butches for providing the food for the day.”
