Defender Tyler Garratt says the Checkatrade Trophy has improved him as a footballer following Rovers’ penalty shootout victory over Scunthorpe United.
Liam Mandeville opened the scoring before Clayton Lewis equalised for the visitors in the second half, and Garratt was impressed with the younger Rovers players’ performance against an experienced Iron side.
“I think this tournament has benefited me, coming into the first team and trying to develop more as a player and the more I’ve played the more I have improved in each game,” said Garratt.
“It was a good shift from all the lads and it is a confidence boost that we are unbeaten in the competition so far, it was important to win at home and the young lads did well.
“We were disappointed to draw, but the younger players have done really well, there were a lot of positives for us and it was pleasing to see.”
Garratt spent time on loan at Vanarama National League side Eastleigh last season, but the 21-year-old says he has benefited from a full pre-season with Rovers.
“I feel a lot more confident this season, I have had a good pre-season and when I get onto the pitch I feel like I know what I am doing and I try and help the younger lads when I can,” said Garratt.
“I didn’t go anywhere over the summer, worked hard every day on getting fitter and improving bits of my game and I feel like it has paid off.
“The gaffer is a fantastic manager, he and Gavin Strachan have helped me improve a lot and so have the senior players.”
