Ferguson embracing cup tie

2 November 2017

Darren Ferguson wants his Rovers players to stamp their authority against non-league Ebbsfleet United in the FA Cup first round this weekend.

Two leagues separate the teams going into the game, and the manager says that Rovers will have to be wary of the threat caused by the home side.

“As soon as the draw was made we knew it wouldn’t be an easy game, it will be tough for us but we have to play our own game,” he said.

“The opening round of the FA Cup is always big for any club and we don’t want to be one of the sides on the wrong end of an upset.

“We will go there and make sure we go about our business in the right way and get the win, our preparation won’t change.”

Ferguson believes getting on the front foot early in the game will be key to Rovers progressing, as they look to make it through to the second round of the competition.

“It will be a typical cup tie, they will be right up for it and I’ll remind the players before the game that there will be shocks across the weekend, we have to make sure we aren’t one of them,” he added.

“In these sort of games you have to get control early and set the tone for the afternoon, if we can score early then that will be massive.

“The opening period of any game is important as the basics need doing and we have to ensure we don’t give them any confidence.”
