Two goals from Andy Williams, the first from the penalty spot, were added to by strikes from Alfie Beestin and Liam Mandeville.

Schofield said: “The senior players were excellent, and it was great to see them scoring goals. If you score goals your confidence goes through the roof, so it has been a really good exercise.

“I thought it was a really good performance, 90 minutes under the belt for some of the more senior players who need it and some really good football at times. This is not only a stepping stone for the younger players, but for the senior players to get game time.”

Although it was players from the first-team squad who scored the goals, it was a fresh-faced side where the youth team players who featured more than held their own.

Schofield added: “It is their stepping stone, they are comfortable and having a really good spell at the moment. Now it is about being consistent, so when they play in the youth team on Saturday they need to hit them same standards again.

“Then whether their next game is in the first team, youth team or Development squad then they need to maintain the standards. That is the sign of whether they progress or not, they need to maintain the standards regardless of which team at Doncaster Rovers they are playing in.”
