Ferguson hails quickfire Rovers

18 October 2017

Darren Ferguson praised the quick start from his players during Tuesday night’s win over Portsmouth.

Goals from Liam Mandeville and Tommy Rowe in the opening five minutes ensured Rovers bounced back after defeat away from home at the weekend.

The win meant that Rovers earned back to back home wins at the Keepmoat Stadium, and Ferguson was pleased to get back to winning ways.

“It’s a big three points it is a very important victory for us, and the early start gave us a great platform to go forward,” he said.

“It’s a good win and I’m pleased for the players, they’ve really dug in and caused them all sorts of problems. I was very happy with the first half and, after their goal, we had to change shape because they were getting too much possession so I had to do something to stop that. But, in the end, I think we deserved the victory.”

Ferguson was also happy with the way his side ground out a result, praising the returning Mathieu Baudry, and commended his side for their second half resilience.

“Baudry has a bit more experience and he can bring the ball out of the defence very well which we know about, and I thought he did that really well, it wasn’t a gamble playing him and he was ready and he played well in the system we had,” he added.

“The world-class save from Ian Lawlor at the end sums up the determination that we had to get the result and that is what you need at times to get over the line and it might not necessarily be pretty football, we had the belief and we got in early doors.

“I’ve said to the players that they have to focus on Saturday because, if they can get a win, then that’s three on the bounce at home and three wins out of four so it’s an important game and hopefully we can go and get another great result.”

Rovers host Walsall at the Keepmoat Stadium on Saturday, and you can get your ticket for the game via the Club Doncaster Box Office, either visiting at the ground, calling on 01302 762576, or visiting tickets.clubdoncaster.co.uk.
