Ferguson impressed with youngsters

4 October 2017

Manager Darren Ferguson was thrilled with how his young Rovers side saw off Sunderland U21 1-0 in the group stage of the Checkatrade Trophy.

Players such as Reece Fielding, Jacob Fletcher and Tyler Walker were amongst the starting XI and Ferguson says there were a lot of positives to take from the game.

“There were a lot of young players on show, it was a very young team and I think the average age was 19 in the last 30 minutes and I was delighted with the way they played,” said Ferguson.

“Flecther is a really good footballer, he has a lovely left foot and has good balance, he produced some nice stuff and I really like him.

“The win is great for the young players, the lads who have come on have done really well and it was a good team performance with a lot of positives.”

Southend United are the visitors to the Keepmoat on Saturday in Sky Bet League One, and Ferguson is expecting a similar challenge to one they faced against Bradford City last time out in the league.

“They had a bad run and they have come out of it well winning their last three games which will give them a lot of confidence, and they have a lot of similarities to Bradford,” said Ferguson.

“Nile Ranger and Simon Cox are a handful upfront, it looks like they are going to lose their right-back to international duty and he is an important player for them.

“We have a had a bit of a look at them this week and have done some work on how we want to play on Saturday with the players who were not involved against Sunderland.”
