Liam Mandeville has vowed to take his chance in the Rovers starting XI after he was left as the only striker available to manager Darren Ferguson due to injuries and suspension respectively.
The 20-year-old took advantage of a similar scenario this time last year and went on to get into double figures in all competitions in the 2016/17 campaign.
Mandeville said: “This is the opportunity I’ve been waiting for and the one I talked about a couple of weeks ago so it’s down to me now to take it.
“Playing up top as a lone striker isn’t something I’ve done very often in the early part of my career but I’ll work hard to try and get us a positive result.
“It’s down to me to keep myself in the team, something similar happened last season and it worked out for me then so I’m looking to try and do the same.”
Rovers face Portsmouth at the Keepmoat Stadium on Tuesday evening, and Mandeville says that now is the time to turn performances into points in Sky Bet League One.
“We’ve been saying it all season and it’s not so much about the performances now with the position we find ourselves in, we need to start grinding out results,” he added.
“It’s crucial that during the times when we’re on top in games we need to take advantage of it and go in front, we’ve done well defensively but not scored in enough games.”
