Port Vale reserves 2 Rovers Development 0

18 October 2017

Development manager John Schofield was impressed with the way his side coped against an experienced Port Vale side on Wednesday.

The Valiants fielded players such as Anthony Kay, Adam Yates and Tyrone Barnett who have all featured heavily in the EFL, and Schofield says the youngsters can a lot away from the game.

“We played a very experienced side no doubt about it, there were players on that pitch who have played 300 or more games in the Football League,” he said.

“My lads stuck to their task and, as I have said previously, it is a good learning cure for the players. We created three or four decent opportunities and just couldn’t take them, but I’m very pleased overall.”

Port Vale opened the scoring after 19 minutes, as a right-footed effort from Jack Stobbs found the top left hand corner of Marko Marosi’s goal.

Rovers nearly responded moments later as a through ball from Issam Ben Khemis found the feet of James Morris, but goalkeeper Ryan Boot made a decent save to deny him.

It took the hosts just three minutes after the break to double their lead, as a ball from Stobbs was prodded home by Dan Turner at the back post.

Youngster Danny Amos and Jacob Fletcher featured in the game, and Schofield says it has been a brilliant month for both players.

“It has been an amazing month for the club, the academy and the youth policy,” he added.

“Jacob made his first team debut and has been involved a lot of over the past few weeks which is fantastic.

“Danny Amos, who I thought was excellent, has played for Northern Ireland, scored on his debut and got the winner against Hartlepool on Saturday, so it’s been a great start to the season for him.”
