Rovers U18s 4 Walsall U18s 3

26 October 2017

Myron Gibbons completed a stunning comeback as Rovers U18s booked their place in the second round of the FA Youh Cup with a chilling win at the Keepmoat Stadium.

Paul Stancliffe’s men took an early lead after Morgan James’ cross from the right was tapped in by Walsall’s defender Joe Brown under pressure from Lewis Scattergood.

Rovers’ lead was not to last, though, as the Saddlers made a quick come back after a stunning cross from Walsall’s winger Cody Fisher found the top left corner of James Leverton’s net.

Walsall took control as they earned their second. Leverton pulled off a save after a Dan O’Sullivan shot from distance, but Kian Flanagan was there to feed off the scraps and poke it into the back of the net.

Nobody could have predicted what was in store for Stancliffe’s youngsters in the second half as Walsall earned themselves a two-goal lead when Mitchell Candlin found himself unmarked in the box. When the ball fell at his feet he punished Rovers for their lapse in concentration by burying the ball in the bottom left of Leverton’s goal.

Rovers, however, showed they have great character and determination as they scored two goals in quick succession. Scattergood netted a sumptuous over-head bicycle kick and, moments later, substitute Matthew Overton levelled things for a jubilant Rovers has he struck from the edge of the box.

Rovers wrapped up proceedings a goal from another substitute, Gibbons rounding off a quick counter attack to seal progress.
