Stancliffe praises character of young Rovers

27 October 2017

Paul Stancliffe says the Rovers U18 side should take plenty of confidence from their FA Youth Cup comeback win over Walsall.

Myron Gibbons’ winner completed the comeback from 3-1 down to seal a 4-3 victory and book a spot in the second round.

U18 coach Stancliffe said: “I was delighted with them to come back as they did. To an outsider this might not seem huge, but to a 16 or 17 year old playing on the first-team pitch in front of a few hundred people can be daunting.

“They need to keep that momentum going, it should give them the confidence to push on with Notts County coming up on Saturday.”

Stancliffe felt his side showed real belief in the second period as they fought back from two goals down to win the match.

He added: “We are pleased with the way the second half went, and the determination, character and attitude they have shown. We tweaked the shape a little bit, but it’s still down to the players to do it.

“That’s what we said at half-time: the play was just a little bit slow, but the second-half had a tempo to it and  we created a chance right at the beginning of the second period.”

Rovers return to the Keepmoat Stadium on Tuesday October 31 as they face Scunthorpe United in the Checkatrade Trophy. Get your tickets from the Club Doncaster Box Office, call 01302 762576 or go to tickets.clubdoncaster.co.uk
