Ferguson praises May

26 September 2017

Darren Ferguson has been impressed by the improvement in striker Alfie May at the start of his first full season with the club.

May is Rovers’ top-scorer in all competitions this season with five goals, and Ferguson believes a full pre-season has helped the 24-year-old.

“He’s improved technically, he keeps the ball very well and makes it hard for the defenders he comes up against,” he said.

“Pre-season helped him massively as it was the first one he’s ever been involved in, he’s physically matured and has looked sharp from day one.

“He knows he has got the respect of his team-mates and the fans like him as well, he’s great to have around the place and a good player to work with.”

Rovers’ next opponents in Sky Bet League One are table-toppers Shrewsbury Town, and Ferguson is expecting a tough game as they look for a first home win of the season at the Keepmoat Stadium.

“They will come here full of confidence on the back of a great start to the season, they probably should have won at the weekend as well so it will be difficult for us,” he added.

“We know that if we’re at it then we’re a match for anyone in this league, hopefully that shows as I’ve got real belief in my players.

“Ideally we would have wanted to win a game at home in the league by now but we’re not far off, we want to make this place a fortress again as that’s what brought us so much success last season.”

Follow Rovers at the Keepmoat Stadium on Tuesday when Shrewsbury Town visit from only £17. Call the Club Doncaster Box Office on 01302 762 576 or purchase online now at tickets.clubdoncaster.co.uk.
