Marquis happy with goal

13 September 2017

Striker John Marquis was back on the scoresheet as Rovers narrowly lost 2-1 to Rochdale in Sky Bet League One.

Marquis opened the scoring late in the game at the Crown Oil Arena, before the Dale pulled two goals back in stoppage time to hand them the win, but Marquis says he is delighted to back amongst the goals.

“A Darren Ferguson team always scores goals, so I’m surprised we went that long without scoring but it fell nicely for me and I was happy with my goal, but at the end of the day the points tally is the one that is the most important,” he said.

“You can have as much possession as you want but you have to score, we have a lot of quality in the dressing room and us scoring goals in the long term won’t be a problem I’m sure.

“We are disappointed especially after Saturday, some of the goals we have conceded this season have been straight into our top corner, there is nothing Ian Lawlor can do about it, he did well with his penalty save but we’ve come away with no points which isn’t what we deserve.”

Rovers host Scunthorpe United in a local derby on Sunday, and Marquis is keen for the side to put things right next time out.

“We know it’ll be a big game, it’s not a derby I’ve played in before so I’m looking forward to it, but we want the three points that we deserve it after the performances we have put in and we want to win,” he said.

“The result here is gutting, but we will sit down and analyse it and we will look to score first on Sunday, keep concentration and look to rectify this against Scunthorpe.

“I’ve not heard much about this derby but I’ll be keeping my head down between now and the game, there’s a lot of attacking quality in our side, but hopefully I can turn up on Sunday and do the business.”
