May relishes Arsenal experience

21 September 2017

Alfie May says playing against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium was a great experience, after he came up against German World Cup winning defender Per Mertesacker.

Rovers were defeated by Arsene Wenger’s side thanks to Theo Walcott’s goal midway through the first half, but May believes the game was much closer than many expected.

He said: “Their pace was impressive in the opening 10 minutes but we started to grow into the game after that and had chances ourselves.

“The mind-set doesn’t really change no matter who we come up against, but coming to the Emirates and playing in front of so many people it’s important to show the quality we’ve got.

“This time last year I was working on a building site so the rise is unbelievable for me, I had 92 family and friends here watching me and they’ve all been so supportive.”

May is Rovers’ top scorer this season with four in all competitions, and he is looking to continue that form as Darren Ferguson’s side attempt to climb the Sky Bet League One table.

He added: “I’ve started off this season well and scored a few goals which has boosted my confidence but I understand we have some very good strikers at this club.

“Whether I start games or come off the bench I’m still going to perform the same and give everything I possibly can for the team.”
