Darren Ferguson felt the performance of Danny Amos was the main positive to take out of the 0-0 draw at Oldham Athletic in Sky Bet League One.
The 18-year-old made his full league debut for the club at Boundary Park, and the manager was pleased with how he dealt with the step up to first-team action.
He said: "He was a real outlet for us with the width down the left, and he should be delighted with that performance and it was a reward for the work we've done as a club during his development.
"He's good with set-pieces and his delivery was excellent, we should have probably scored from one or two of them so his display was the most pleasing thing to take away from it.
"I think we've had a problem with the balance of the team all season, I felt the game was a good opportunity for Danny to come in as he's done really well for the development side this season."
The draw secured Rovers' Sky Bet League One status for next season, but Ferguson believes his side missed a good opportunity to claim all three points.
He added: "It was a very competitive game, both teams gave everything and my players showed great determination to keep a clean sheet and I was happy with the overall performance.
"The performances have been good but we find ourselves in a position where we're coming up against teams who are fighting for everything, the next two games are very important for us.
"It's frustrating that we didn't win the game because at times it was there for the taking, we had a couple of moments where the right pass could have resulted in a clear shot at goal."
