Marquis wants strong finish

16 April 2018

John Marquis believes Rovers can maintain their momentum for the final six games of the Sky Bet League One season.

Rovers host Bury on Tuesday night at the Keepmoat Stadium on the back of a 2-1 win at MK Dons, and Marquis feels there is plenty of quality in the side should the team be rotated to ensure the freshness around the squad is maintained.

“We have so many games and the gaffer has said about individual players doing whatever they feel the need to do just to feel fresh for the games that are coming up, there’s definitely some battered bodies in there but we’re making sure we’re ready,” he said.

“The manager is in a position now where he has a lot of players that are fit and that he has a lot of different options, but I feel very good after this week, I’ve done what I’ve needed to and there was no way I’d be missing out today.

“I’m feeling fresh and I think that showed in my performance today, we have six games left with 18 points to play for, I don’t see why we can’t go on and get all 18, and I want to play every game and every minute of that.”

Marquis’ second-half brace saw him chalk up his 13th and 14th goals of the season in all competitions, bringing his total tally to 40 strikes across just under two campaigns with Rovers, and he is on the hunt for more as the season draws to a close.

“I’m not getting too far ahead of myself, I’m delighted to get the two goals. I believe I could get up to 20 goals, if I get the chances I’ll take them, and you never know what might happen,” he added.

“The way that the team plays, my role doesn’t change too much, I play as the number nine, I’m not too different in any system so I know what my role is, I know that pretty well and so does the manager and I fit into the side well.

“We have six games left and we need to believe as a team that no matter what happens we need to build a winning mentality in the side ready for next season, we can’t take anything lightly, we want to finish the season strongly but it’s all down to us and how we play.”
