Mason: finishing well the focus

30 April 2018

Niall Mason is aiming to finish the season strongly ahead of Tuesday night’s game against AFC Wimbledon.

Rovers host the Dons in Sky Bet League One, looking to return to winning ways in their penultimate home fixture of the season, and Mason says the squad is looking to finish well in order to progress next season.

“Finishing the season well is still our big focus, there are no signs of things calming down and us slowing, your mentality at this stage is only affected if you’re unprofessional, but no one here is thinking like that,” he said.

“Everyone has something to play for, not just in the league but on a personal level as well, especially if you want to keep your place in the side next season, we’re ticking over and trying to play as well as possible and get those results.

“We want to finish with a couple of good results at home and then that can give us a little bit of momentum as we head into next season, if we finish the season well then we will all feel that we’ve had a good first season back in this league.”

Mason is coming towards the end of his second season with the club, following his permanent move to the Keepmoat Stadium last May, and he believes he has improved a lot during his time in South Yorkshire.

“I feel like I’ve improved myself, I’ve gained a lot of experience and played quite a lot of games again, so I feel it’s been a good learning curve for me this year and I have definitely learnt a lot,” he added.

“I fill in around the side, but I keep my place too through my performances and that’s what I aim to do, I’ve played most of the last two seasons at left back, and now I feel comfortable playing there, but I’m happy to play wherever as long as I’m in the side.

“This is only my second season as a professional footballer, I feel like I have learned a lot throughout the campaign, I think I started off quite well, then I had a dip where I was in and out of the side, but I feel like I’m back on track now and found some consistency.”
