The only way is up for McCullough

20 April 2018

Luke McCullough says the team are looking up as they head towards the end of their first season back in Sky Bet League One.

Rovers have five games left in this campaign, starting with the visit of Oxford United on Saturday, and McCullough believes that a strong end to the season will set them up nicely ahead of next year.

“There’s less pressure on us in terms of the league table now, but there is on us to get more points on the board and finish as high as we possibly can, I think that comes from yourself as well because all the lads want to do well,” he said.

“I think if we finish the season strongly then it can be looked on as a good season really, finishing in the top half as a newly-promoted side and pushing for the top 10, I think that can be considered a success at the end of it.

“We want to build on this season and push on for the next, when we look back on the early part of the season and the mistakes we made with late goals and things like that it was frustrating, but we’ve worked on it and put that right.”

Rovers face 17th-placed Oxford at the Keepmoat Stadium this weekend, and McCullough says they will be looking to extend their unbeaten run to seven games.

“Oxford are probably looking for one more win just to guarantee safety I think, they’ve got good players in the team with a lot of energy and the two strikers they play with up top can cause problems, so it’ll be an interesting game,” McCullough added.

“I think at this time of the season we just have to concentrate on ourselves, I think if we play well then we know that we are good enough to beat anyone, with Oxford we’re not sure if they’ll be nervous with where they are but we just have to focus on us.

"We all want to do as well as we can for this team in order to finish the season as strongly as we possibly can, and we’ve seen it with teams before that how they finish can lead on to next season so that’s what we’re looking to do.”
