Wright enjoying his football

8 April 2018

Joe Wright felt Rovers were good value overall after they earned a point on the road at Gillingham.

The centre-back played an instrumental part at the heart of the Rovers defence as he helped his side to keep a clean sheet as Rovers maintained their recent run of good results, with a hard-fought draw to push them over 50-point mark.

“We’re very happy to get a clean sheet here, it’s a tough place to come and they put us under all sorts of pressure in the second half, but we’ve dealt with it very well and been able to see the game out,” he said.

“We were very good in the first half, but we didn’t really get going after the break and we’re disappointed with how we played in the second half. But we’ve ground out another result and not conceded.

“The pitch was dry and bobbly and it didn’t suit the way that we wanted to play, we had to be more direct and we did alright with that in the first half - we dug deep to create more chances later on in the game.”

Wright has started the past five games in Sky Bet League One, being a part of a defensive unit that has conceded two goals in the period, and he is looking forward to the competition for places in the side heating up as players return from injury.

“Luke McCullough has shown how good a player he is, Andy Butler came back in to the side, and Tom Anderson is coming back soon too, I will have to make sure that I’m playing at the top of my game on a consistent basis to keep my place in the team,” Wright added.

“Me and Mathieu Baudry have glued really well together over the last few games, we haven’t played too much together but we’ve been teammates for two seasons now, we do a lot of work in training together and we have a strong understanding.

“I’m a player that likes to focus on the games, I’m enjoying my football here and I’m delighted to be here for the next couple of seasons, I feel like I’ve improved a lot and I’m looking forward to hopefully continue that.”
