York City U18s 0 Rovers U18s 2

8 April 2018

Rovers’ U18s climbed further up the table after Myron Gibbons’ double capped off an outstanding display against York City U18s.

Paul Stancliffe made two changes to the side that won at Oldham last weekend, with Elliott Walker and Junior Smith dropping to the bench to make way for for Morgan James and Danny Amos.

Rovers stamped down their authority early in the game with wing-back Cody Prior making back-to-back vital tackles, stalling York’s attack and slowing their momentum down.

When Rovers did come on the attack they did it in style as they as Cameron Foulkes hit the ball on the volley from range which glided the ball across the box, though it went out for a goal kick.

Louis Jones’ first action of the afternoon came on the half-hour mark as a free-kick from York was taken from 25-yards forcing him to dive low to his right post.

Rovers quickly countered and Myron Gibbons provided a teasing pass through York and released the awaiting James Morris, but Ryan Whitley was equal to his effort.

The side enjoyed their attacks that much that even centre-half Robbie Miller got in on the action - testing Whitley in goal by shooting from the edge of the penalty area.

York came out fighting in the second period as Harry Thompson played a long ball forward to the head of Isaac Overton but he heads well wide of a post.

Rovers responded imminently with a goal as Morris played a ball through to Gibbons who beat the off-side trap before sprinting forward and sliding it low past Whitley at his near post.

Jacob Fletcher saw one of his efforts scuffed away at the last minute as he shot from close range, beating Whitley, but a York defender was on the ball and managed to make the pivotal clearance.

Midfielder Will McGowan continued to ask questions of the York keeper as he pulled the trigger from the edge of the area, wbut Whitley was alert and parred thunderbolt shot away to safety.

Rovers went into cruise control and Gibbons got his second, doubling Rovers’ lead after a blunder from Whitley saw him stumble as he came out to get the ball and Gibbons capitalised slotting the ball calmly past the keeper safely securing all three points for Stancliffe’s side.
