Striker John Marquis has praised manager Grant McCann’s half-time changes which lead to Rovers’ 3-2 victory over Southend United.

Goals from Mallik Wilks, Tommy Rowe and Marquis himself set Rovers on their way to three points in the second period, and Marquis says the team will continue to attack.

“The manager made a few tweaks at half-time and we had a good 10-15 minute spell after the break and we applied ourselves with what he wanted us to do,” he said.

“We have won the game which is the most important thing, the manager said he wants to play attacking football and score goals, and today was probably the blueprint of how he’ll want us to play this season.

“It’s all about the fluidity in the team, my position has changed and I am enjoying it so far, and if we can keep getting the results that is all that matters.”

Marquis’ 51st minute strike opened the scoring at Roots Hall in the 2018/19 Sky Bet League One opener, and Marquis is hoping to better the 15 goals in all competitions he scored last campaign.

“I want to kick on again from last season and with the attacking players that we have in this team and the way the manager wants us to play, I want to get in on the act and score as many as I can,” he added.

“I scored which is nice, I didn’t really get many chances in the first-half, but when you get your chance you have to take it and I probably only got the one which I took.

“I set personal targets, if I can better last year that will be a start but I want to kick on much more than that, we have 45 games left and I want keep going.”

Rovers are looking to build on this victory when Wycombe Wanderers visit in the first home game of the season on Saturday August 11.
