Niall Mason has heaped praise upon Grant McCann’s attacking intent over the pre-season period.

Rovers hit five past Frickley Athletic before hammering Deeping Rangers 8-1, and Mason says he has enjoyed the freedom the full-backs have had during those games.

“We have concentrated a lot on the attacking side of our play of late, getting the full-backs up the pitch and I have really enjoyed it so far,” he said.

“You saw it against Deeping Rangers where the boys put eight past them, we had plenty of chances and I believe the goals will come soon.

“That is what pre-season is about, that is what it is there for, right-back is probably my preferred position so it is nice to get back to that.”

McCann has strengthened his side since joining the club with the additions of Tom Anderson, Ali Crawford and Mallik Wilks, and Mason says he is looking forward to seeing how the new lads perform.

“I was delighted when I found out that Tom was signing on permanently, I think he was brilliant for us the first time round,” he added.

Mallik is new to us with the pace he has got and he has proved himself in the Football League with Accrington, so it will be good to see how he gets on.

“I think we felt that competitive edge return in the game against Sheffield United, because there were a lot of fans there, and I know we are all looking forward to the season starting on Saturday.”

Rovers kick-off their Sky Bet League One campaign at Southend United on Saturday August 4, before their first home outing against Wycombe Wanderers the following Saturday.
