McCann: Plenty of competition for places

4 August 2018

Manager Grant McCann says the competition for places in his squad is strong ahead of their season opener against Southend United on Saturday.

Rovers travel to Roots Hall to kick off their 2018/19 Sky Bet League One campaign this weekend, and McCann says the fight for places can only be a positive ahead of the season opener.

“We’re fully fit and I’m really happy with how we’re looking ahead of the weekend, we’re all geared up and ready to go, credit must go to the fitness staff and the medical team for making sure everyone is good to go,” he said.

“Everyone is breathing down each other’s necks, not just up top but in midfield and across defence too, three out of the six in midfield will be in, likewise two out of the three centre backs I have available, the strength in depth is great here.

“Every area of the pitch I feel is strong, goalkeepers and full-backs give me a great choice, I’m really pleased with what we have, and if we add to that a little bit more then we can be really strong this season.”

Rovers travel to Southend on Saturday who under Chris Powell lost just four of their past 18 league games, but McCann says they are fully focused on the task in hand, and they will be looking to begin their season as they mean to go on.

“Chris has done a tremendous job since he went into the club, he’s steadied the ship and he’s recruited well, they’ve got some good players who are experienced in this division, and Roots Hall is a tough place to go, but we will be prepared for the challenge,” he added.

“League One always seems like a tough division to be in, personally, I don’t feel the league is as strong this year as it was last year, but there are still some really strong sides who have strengthened well.

“We go there really clear in our minds about what the plan is there and what we have to do, we can take real confidence out of what we’ve worked on and how well we’ve played, especially against the Championship sides and we know we can do well this year.”

Rovers kick-off their Sky Bet League One campaign at Southend United on Saturday August 4, before their first home outing against Wycombe Wanderers the following Saturday.
