Tommy Rowe was honoured to be named as Rovers captain ahead of the start of the 2018/19 Sky Bet League One campaign.

Rowe looks set to lead the team out against Southend United on Saturday in the season opener, and the midfielder is relishing the opportunity.

“It’s a great honour, it’s a privilege coming in when I did having James Coppinger and Andy Butler as captains. I’ve picked up a lot in terms of what I need to know, Copps has taught me a lot, and that’s just natural because he’s been here for so long,” he said.

“I’ve had the captaincy before at previous clubs, I had it at a young age at Stockport, and then again at Peterborough, then it was a case of leading by example. I came into the game fairly young and learnt from a lot of experienced people around me and that helped.

“It’s not just for games either, it’s in training as well, I have to be a natural voice that people can talk to, then that can translate onto the pitch as well, I have to make sure we communicate well.”

Rovers start their second campaign back in League One away at Roots Hall this weekend, and Rowe says the team is ready to go after working hard under new manager Grant McCann throughout pre-season.

“Southend are a very experienced side in this division, the manager has a lot of experience and they have a lot of good players,” he said.

“But we’ve done our homework and we know a lot about them, we understand where their weaknesses are and how we can hurt them. This week has been all about what we can do with the ball, we will be ready once that whistle goes at 3pm on Saturday.”

Rovers kick-off their Sky Bet League One campaign at Southend United on Saturday August 4, before their first home outing against Wycombe Wanderers the following Saturday.
