Rowe: We're up for the fight

4 August 2018

Tommy Rowe says Rovers are ready to go ahead of Saturday’s season opener at Southend United.

Rovers kick off their 2018/19 campaign at Roots Hall, and Rowe says the progression made so far can stand them in good stead this season.

“It’s a new formation and system that we have had to get used to, we’ve done well with it over pre-season - there’s still a lot of improvement that we need to make, but that is to be expected early on,” he said.

“We’ll go about our business quietly, we’re not going to be shouting about things yet, we have a young team but there’s a lot of confidence within the squad.

“It’s a long season ahead and we’re not going to get carried away, we’re going to stay level-headed, make sure we keep improving throughout the season, then who knows where that can take us.”

Rowe is starting his third full season with Rovers following his move from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2016, and with the midfielder now named captain, he says the aim is to progress higher this year.

“I keep my targets to myself, but I’ve wound up a few of the forwards by telling them I’ve scored more than they have in the past couple seasons,” he added.

“We have a license to get forward at times in this system, but I’ll be keeping my personal targets to myself once again.

“There’s no reason why we shouldn’t tell everyone what our targets are as a group, though, we all want to be fighting towards playing in the Championship next year - we want to play in a higher league and that has to be the aim.

“We’ve progressed nicely over the past two or three years and there’s a real ambition at the club, and that’s one of the main reasons I signed when I did, we all want to progress, we need to take those next steps now and have a good season.”

Rovers kick-off their Sky Bet League One campaign at Southend United on Saturday August 4, before their first home outing against Wycombe Wanderers the following Saturday.
