Whiteman relishes midfield freedom

Ben Whiteman is enjoying the midfield freedom he is afforded under the system deployed by Rovers boss Grant McCann this season.

Whiteman has started all five of Rovers games in league and cup this season, with three of those in the league alongside Tommy Rowe and new loan man Herbie Kane, and he is enjoying the way the trio have connected in midfield quickly.

“The gaffer wants us to get on the ball, dictate the play, be positive, and me, Herbie and Tommy want to dominate games, I think everyone can see how dangerous the rotation between the three of us in midfield can be,” he said

“Herbie’s done very well, but coming from a big club like Liverpool we all expected him to be a very good player - he’s come in and done well, he really controls the midfield and he’s not afraid to go out and get on the ball.

“I’ve started off okay but there’s always room for improvement, I just want to stake my claim for a place in the team, keep doing well and getting games under my belt.”

Whiteman admitted his Rovers teammates were disappointed to come away from Tuesday night’s game with Shrewsbury Town with just a point, but said they are determined to come back stronger when Portsmouth visit on Saturday.

“We lacked the final pass at times, that spark, we feel we dominated the game for the majority of it but allowed them back into it towards them which isn’t us at all,” he said.

“We’ve been very positive in the first three games we played and won, even in the Burton game we had chances.”

Rovers host Portsmouth in a Sky Bet League One clash on Saturday before Blackpool visit in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night.  Tickets are available via the Club Doncaster Box Office - purchase in store at the Keepmoat Stadium, by calling on 01302 762576, or online at tickets.clubdoncaster.co.uk.
