Herbie Kane says he wants to play a big role in the remainder of the season after extending his loan from Premier League side Liverpool until the end of the season.

Kane has been a crucial figure in the Rovers midfield during the first half of the season, and after signing a loan extension just before Christmas, he says a push for the play-offs was a big factor in remaining at the Keepmoat Stadium.

“I’m happy to have extended my time with the club and I’m looking to help us get promoted, that’s the main goal for me is getting us up to the Championship, I feel like I’ve fitted in since day one and I’m really enjoying my football,” he said.

“I was always keen to stay on and help the team out, I get on well with the gaffer and he’s put a lot of trust in me which I’m grateful for, and I feel that there is something good that we can go and do here.

“Getting into the top six is very realistic for us, we just have to keep on doing what we’ve been doing in picking up those results, hopefully we can start to climb that table even higher and get in amongst, and I want to be a big part of that.”

Kane’s first game since his loan extension was the 2-2 draw with Oxford United, and the Liverpool loanee says the result can provide a learning curve as they head into the festive period.

“It’s a good point for us in the end really, it was a very scrappy game, and obviously we’re disappointed with how unlucky we’ve been at the end not to hold on, but the main thing for us is that we didn’t lose,” he added.

“We had control in the game for most of the first half I felt, we just needed to manage the game a bit better after the break, but they got that goal right at the death and that’s seen us come away with just one point rather than three.

“We’re all disappointed not to pick up another win, but we haven’t lost and we’re unbeaten in eight, we felt strong after scoring the first goal, but we couldn’t hold on after the second, but we will definitely learn from this.”

Rovers return to the Keepmoat Stadium to take on Rochdale on New Year's Day, tickets are available from tickets.clubdoncaster.co.uk.
