Grant McCann praised his side’s excellent performance as they saw out 2018 in style with a comfortable win at Gillingham.
Rovers striker John Marquis opened the scoring just before the half hour mark and second half goals from Malik Wilks and Danny Andrew ensured that, despite a late goal for the home side, Rovers would take all three points at Priestfield Stadium.
“It was a top-class performance from start to finish. I thought we controlled the whole game and possibly should have had another two or three goals. We’re pleased with the win, it’s a good response from us after a disappointing result at Fleetwood Town,” said McCann.
“It was never going to be easy coming here as Gillingham have just beaten the league leaders Portsmouth. We’ve got another game coming in quick succession, so we can’t get too excited about it. It’s a good performance and a good result away from home.
“Gillingham had a little spell in the second half of maybe five or 10 minutes but nothing that was going to hurt us. A couple of the boys are disappointed with the goal we conceded but I’ve told them to forget about it, it was about coming here and getting the three points and we’ve done that.”
McCann was also pleased to see three different names on the scoresheet proving there are goalscorers throughout his team.
“We had three different scorers and it’s nice to see Danny Andrews getting one because he probably has two or three shots a game and I was pleased to see that one nestle in the goal,” he added.
“I was pleased to see John Marquis score. He’s always alive in there and John wants to be the highest goal scorer in this league and if he keeps going the way he’s going, he’s on target for it.
“I was pleased for Malik Wilks too. He is quick, he’s strong, he’s direct but I think there’s more to come from him and that’s my job to get the best out of him.”
