Mason targeting first Rotherham clash

23 February 2018

Niall Mason is hopeful that he can experience his first proper taste of a local derby on Saturday as preparations continue for the Rotherham United fixture.

Mason missed out through injury that last time the sides met in the league, but he is looking forward to the prospect of facing the Millers this time around.

“These are the games that you play football for, I was gutted to miss out last time, I experienced Grimsby home and away last season, but this is the big one that we’re all looking forward too,” said Mason.

“I’m buzzing for this one, I’ve never really experienced anything like it before, I have memories of the Youth Cup when I was at Southampton, playing Portsmouth in front of 15,000 for a youth game, but nothing quite like this.

“The manager wants us to play with high intensity and aggression and I think when we’ve been successful, we’ve always been on the front foot and we got back to that last week.”

Mason has played in every position in the back line this season for Darren Ferguson’s side, and he says he is happy to slot in whenever and wherever he is needed.

“I’m a bit of an all-rounder, I’d maybe see myself as a midfielder, but I’ve played centre back, at full-back and in midfield, I’m just happy that the gaffer has enough faith in me to play anywhere,” he added.

“We have a very good squad with a lot of good players, there are always places up for grabs and every position has two or three good players.

“We’re looking up, hopefully with a couple of good wins we can set ourselves up for a good end to the season and that starts again on Saturday, a good result will give us great momentum and hopefully I can contribute to that.”
