Ferguson hails Beestin improvement

24 January 2018

Manager Darren Ferguson praised the impact that forward Alfie Beestin has had on games this season and says the 20-year-old was the best player on the pitch against Scunthorpe United.

Beestin scored a stoppage-time equaliser against the Iron on Tuesday night to extend Rovers’ unbeaten run in Sky Bet League One to eight games, and Ferguson believes the forward has really developed this season.

“Beestin’s all-round performance shows you that he deserves a place in the side, that’s two-and-a-half games now that he’s come on and effected the game and scored a couple as well,” he said.

“He scored a great goal against Plymouth and scored a different goal in this game, he led the line very well when the ball went forward, he and John Marquis pressed high as well.

“You have to praise the back line as well, Craig Alcock has come on and done a fantastic job, Joe Wright has made some crucial blocks right at the end too, it shows the determination the players have to get points from games.”

Rovers have had to come from behind to get a draw in their past two games against Shrewsbury Town and Scunthorpe United respectively, but Ferguson says that shows the great character his side possesses.

“I’m delighted that we have come away with a point, when you are losing and one of your player’s scores in the 90th minute to get you something from the game you are always going to be happy,” he added.

“We are showing a lot of resolve to not lose games of football, which you have to give credit to the players for the great character that they shown, and the belief that we have in the team.

“Ben Whiteman could have had a couple of goals again, Beestin has scored in the last minute and he was the best player, he lead the line very well and won a lot of headers, he was outstanding.”
